Pronunciation
Common Problem Areas:
P/F: "P" put your lips together and then open them to release a small puff of air. "P"
is aspirated (makes a bigger puff of air).
"F" put your top teeth on your lower lip and blow air through your teeth. "F" is
not aspirated.
P/B: For both "P" and "B" put your lips together and then open them to release a small
puff of air. "P" is aspirated (makes a bigger puff of air), "B" is not.
B/V: "B" put your lips together and then open them to release a small
puff of air. "B" is not aspirated.
"V" put your top teeth on your lower lip and blow air through your teeth. "V" is
aspirated.
F/V: For both "F" and "V" put your top teeth on your lower lip and blow air through your
teeth. "F" is not aspirated, "V" is (makes a bigger puff of air).
S/Z: For both "S" and "Z" put your teeth together and put your tongue in the middle of
your mouth, right behind your teeth, but not touching them. "S" is not aspirated,
"Z" is (makes a bigger puff of air).
Z/J: "Z" put your teeth together and put your tongue in the middle of your mouth, right
behind your teeth, but not touching them. "Z" is aspirated.
"J" put your tongue on the roof of your mouth, right behind your teeth, then move your
tongue back behind your teeth until you are making the "sh" or "measure" sound. "J" is
aspirated.
L/R: "L" put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind your teeth.
As you make the sound, the air comes out from the sides of your tongue.
"R" your tongue should not touch the top of your mouth. It should be bunched
up towards the back of your mouth with the tip pointing towards the top of your
mouth (BUT NOT TOUCHING!). Your lips should also be round when you say /r/, like
you are getting ready to kiss someone.
D/Th: "D" put your tongue right behind your top teeth and then move it to release a small
puff of air. "D" is like "T" but "D" is aspirated and "T" is not.
"Th" put your tongue between your teeth so that the tip of your tongue is touching the
tips of your top teeth. Now you can make a "th" sound by blowing are through your teeth.
Ch/Sh: "Ch" put your tongue on the roof of your mouth, right behind your teeth, then move
your tongue back behind your teeth until you are making the "sh" or "measure" sound.
"Ch" is like "J" but "Ch" is not aspirated.
"Sh" put your teeth together, with your top teeth in from of your back teeth, and put
your tongue in the middle of your mouth, scrunched up towards the back of your mouth.
"Sh" is not aspirated.
Th/S: "Th" put your tongue between your teeth so that the tip of your tongue is touching the
tips of your top teeth. Now you can make a "th" sound by blowing are through your teeth.
"S" put your teeth together and put your tongue in the middle of
your mouth, right behind your teeth, but not touching them. "S" is not aspirated.
